GMO Right 2 Know March

DSC09288.JPG

Greetings friends!
What an adventure I just finished with the Sustainable Living Roadshow supporting the GMO Right 2 Know March, a mobilization for GMO labeling. GMO food has been covertly put into the US food supply and we are determined to get required labeling on all products containing genetically altered products, in fact president Obama made a very clear campaign promise to label GMO food as a candidate. All of Europe now requires labeling, with many outright banning GMO's completely, here in the US, it is estimated that 80-90% of the food is contaminated with GMO corn, soy, cotton, or canola and this year the FDA approved GMO alfalfa, which for those of you who don't know, organic alfalfa is what many organic dairy farmers feed their cows, this new approval threatens the integrity of organic dairy, as there is virtually no way to stop the interbreeding and spreading of GMO alfalfa once it is released.

About 50 people did the march leaving Brooklyn, NY on Oct 1, through Manhattan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and ending at the White House in Washington, DC. The Human Revolution represented in a variety of ways including MC'ing and performing to welcome the marchers to every major stop, providing our signature Bliss Kits, personal meal kits, educational outreach, and by countless hours of marching and canvasing. It was an amazing experience and we were joined by such luminaries as David Bronner, president of Dr. Bronners Magic Soaps, Josef Wilhelm, president of the German food company Rapunzel and founder of the first two Right 2 Know marches in Europe which were essential in getting the European Union to require labeling. Jeffrey Smith, author of Seeds of Deception joined us for a while, and Eric Neis, former Real World cast member and host of MTV's The Grind brought up the vibes with his amazing Superfood Super Dog Sugar Ray Robinson Cooper the Seed Saver.

All along the march we inspired people to learn more about GMO food, which we were surprised to find that many people knew nothing about. We passed out literature as well as products from our GMO free sponsors all along the route and sleeping ranged all the way from backyards, to campgrounds, to hotels, to the buses. The Non-GMO Project, Capitol Hemp, Dr. Bronners, and the Sustainable Living Roadshow were there to support us all the way.

The March ended with about 50 additional marchers joining us in DC, and by the time we got to the White House we were about 200 strong. A concert and rally was held in Lafayette Square where speakers like Vandana Shiva, Percy Schmeiser, and some of the marches sponsors joined with the music of The Human Revolution and Sara Tone. We received a variety of press coverage including National Public Radio (NPR) as well as German and Chinese news hubs.

Everyone who joined the march was inspired and awakened to the possibility of a world free of GMO food. Some videos from the march are already available online on Athena's Youtube page.
